About Vanessa Cowdrey

Vanessa is an interdisciplinary artist and educator living on the central coast of California. Working as Ceramic Studio Specialist at Monterey Peninsula College, she explores process-based techniques of making, incorporating alternative materials and methods in the creation of her works. She received her MFA from the University of Nevada, Reno, formerly Sierra Nevada University, where she focused on materials research using locally sourced, discarded, and by-product ceramic materials inherent to institutional studio ceramics.
My work is fueled by an immense curiosity about our world, both natural and manmade. I approach creating work through a scientific lens, questioning the results of certain processes, altering variables, and documenting my findings. I examine the evolution of a material after being altered by outside forces with the aim of capturing moments of chance and spontaneity. Each piece becomes an artifact of process, the kiln a metaphor for transformation.
